Press Release

November 2016

The Northeast Backcountry Coalition in partnership with the Catamount Trail Association and the Vermont Backcountry Alliance is pleased to announce three new backcountry ski zones for ski touring this coming winter, 2016-2017 in the Northeast Kingdom.

Over the course of the Fall of 2016, NEKBC will construct natural surface gladed ski zones in the Mt Hor and Bartlett Mountain area of the Willoughby State Forest by November 2016. Skiable lines and a skin track(locations where skier traffic would be encouraged) will be identified and vegetation will be removed from within these lines to increase space for skier traffic. The skiable lines would be roughly 30 feet wide with buffer areas separating the skiable lines.

The second ski zone already under construction is located on Kirby mountain on private land, under the permission of local land owners. Parking is located on west side of Kirby/Ridge road south out of East Burke village.

Our third zone is in East Haven, also on private land, with the permission of 2 local landowners.  This zone consists of 260 acres and over 1200 vertical feet.

The NEKBC is a coalition of backcountry enthusiasts focused on advocating for public access to private and State land for the purpose of recreation.  It is our intention to preserve the existing areas of winter recreation, while continuing to develop and maintain new terrain for backcountry use. We are currently a chapter of the Catamount Trail Association, who is a 501(c)(3) non-profit.
